Final Project – Michelle Marotta: Update

Hi everyone,

Over the past week or so I’ve gone back and forth over the direction of this project. I initially had some documentation, seen here,

and have actually stuck to most of my original plan.

While the vision is different from when I first started, I am overall happy with the final product.

I also moved back and forth over the placement of the projection. I scouted some locations and here are some pictures from that time:

I have an idea of where I want the final project to be presented but I don’t want to say exactly which in case for some reason it doesn’t work out or God forbid and unforeseen circumstances get in the way.

Overall, I had fun with this project and am excited to present it to everyone.

My project is a game with clues, and each clue is a different picture. Some of these pictures were altered in Photoshop, by me. I used Google Images to copy and paste content, but that’s too easy, so to make things more exciting, I used Photoshop. I really enjoy using Photoshop to alter photos because it makes me feel like an artist, plus I’m not too bad at it. My favorite thing to do is make a duplicate layer, merge the two, and put an effect on whatever I’m left with. I also love putting colored shapes over an image and using an effect (how some of the forests pictures are). Besides altering images, I also created my own Photoshop creations. Documentation of Final Project: Karissa Ferrugio & Alexa Russell

Within the past couple weeks, it has been a lot of fun diving in and seeing this project really come to life. The interesting thing I like about our project is the plethora of technology being used. We started by going out to several different locations, to capture B-roll footage with our cameras. After getting a decent amount of footage, we set up the Smart Beam Laser projector and attached it to our laptop using a USB. We projected several different videos and images onto the wall, and played around with location, depth, movement, etc. We then took videos of the projection itself, and documented our interaction with the projection. We also used a second camera to capture a behind the scenes look at how we were going about everything. This footage is what was strung together between the b-roll for the final video. All of the clips were edited together with music and snippets of different speeches/quotes.

The theme we choose to tie everything together is the motivational words of Alan Watts. We are using quotes from some of his motivational speeches to create an inspirational piece using modern technology. Alan Watts caught our attention because as a philosopher, writer, and speaker, in a time when technology was not so advanced, he had many views on how one should live their life, and even made predictions on the future of technology. He was wise beyond his time, and we hope that our project can morph the words of the past, using the technological skills of the future. While working on this project we have come to realize that when combining technology and art, the possibilities are endless. We see our project as a creative cultivation of combining art, technology, and lessons to live by.

Documentation Final Project pt. 2: Jeylin Castaneda

Anne, Ali, and I have tackled this zine for the past two weeks and have collectively created a piece of work that exemplifies wickedness. We have each done four pages each of the zine, created three of those pages to have some interaction with layar and have printed copies for the class to enjoy. Although the printed versions are the ones the class will get to experience, the original copy of the zine is the version that enhances the imperfections translating them into character for the general theme. Final Project: Jared Garcia and Nicholas Carlascio — Pt. II

The second week of class revolved around deconstructing, then reconstructing our project. From the “Red Hot!” idea that Nick initially had, we decided to create something that was a little more interactive.

It all started with one primary obstacle–once the “Red Hot” idea was complete, there was not much else we could have done with it afterwards:

What we initially tried to come up with was a way to add interaction to the board itself. Using a Photocell Sensory that was to be connected to the analog inputs, Nick was going to try and allow for a hand to pass through the Arduino board, and make an LED light turn on. Doing so would have required altering our original code, including a Default Analog Reference, changing the Serial.Begin code to 9600, incorporating a Serial Print Line to read analog instead of digital pins. Once the code was rewritten in Arduino however, there was one obstacle that prevented us from moving forward: (from my notes) “‘The Red-O-Meter is beyond it’s 100% point, “Red Hot!” has been disabled…The Percentage meter has increased and decreased very sporadically (357-290; very briefly)’.”

This was where out original idea came from.

So once we realized that wasn’t going to work, we decided to spend a brief time brainstorming our next idea. After some pondering time, standing up, sitting down, eating some food, we decided what was best for us. We decided we were going to make an Etch-a-Sketch design with the Arduino Board (tagline — “Freedom of Image and Design–I dunno why I put that down, but that was probably something we said at that time,”). Our first inkling towards making that happen revolved around hooking up two Arduino Breadboards. What we would have needed to have done was connect two jumper wires to their respective slots in the Analog Section of the board (Analog pins 4 and 5, respectively on both of them). In order to ensure enough power was coming through, we would need to use 5V pins. The Etch-a-Sketch design would have needed a left (vertical pin) and right (horizontal pin) pot in order to function correctly. So we went on to find a new code to use:

Serial Codes involving characters from the ASCII code (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) with value labels string outputs, and values reading until a certain line of serial code. We needed to have two values within the code: an “x” value, and a “v” value, that would alter once we were able to interact with the pot pins. The next step involved moving the Arduino software into Processing 5. There was a lot of trial and error with the technicalities of the code, including breaking the serial message output into two parts: “Serial.print/value” and “Serial.print 2/value 2”. Another thing we thought we had to initially do was rename the value indicators to things like “xR” and “yL”–which quickly did not become the case.

Our journey to discover how to alter values came forth to a new video detailing strings in “13.2: Strings: Split and Join”–

Still, there was little avail. It took to the very end of class for Professor Cox to finally get the solution of the problem, allowing for values to be independently split and changed with the use of pot pins on the breadboard.

It was a bit of an arduous task–but for not being presented for the solution that Professor Cox gave us, I can only say that I look forward to the results.

After careful revision on the possible projects I could’ve found myself doing as my final composition as an undergraduate, I decided I wanted to work on something that embodied my entire experience at Monmouth University. Considering ideations have been the bulk of our experimentation in responsive media, Anne, myself and Ali have decided to team up and create a zine based off the real life college experience. This zine is meant to include some of our deepest thoughts to some life changing, pivotal moments these past few years. In order to give this project a user experience, we decided to also use Layar to tag links, images, and more to certain pages in the zine that’ll relate somehow to that page or spread.

Also, in addition to our overall theme-this zine is meant to be emotionally raw. In order to successfully have an empowering and relatable reaction, I want this zine to hit the feels to those who have gone rollercoasters throughout not only their educational experience but also socially, mentally, and the overall self growth one experiences.
